Bio – Herbert A (Haz) Samuel

Herbert A (Haz) Samuel is the founder of Green Island Inc. He is an industrial engineer by training and has worked for the government and private sectors in various Caribbean countries, in the areas of energy planning, electricity planning, and project management.

He was St Vincent & the Grenadines’ first Energy Officer during the early 1980s.

Prior to founding Green Island Inc, he was the owner’s project manager for a new US$23m brownfield diesel powerstation complex on St Vincent, implemented by St Vincent Electricity Services Ltd; this project was completed in 2007.

In 2009 he was named as a winner of the 2009 IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest, sponsored by GVEP International, GTZ, the IDB and the Korean government for Welectricity, an innovative social network for energy efficiency in households.

Welectricity went on in 2010 to win a GE Ecomagination Consumer Innovation Award, being named as “Best Idea for The Millennial” in the Ecomagination Smart Grid Challenge, a global innovation contest that attracted almost 4,000 ideas from more than 150 countries worldwide.
