Two St Lucia-based entrepreneurs have been named as the first of 25 winners of the 2009 IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest for Latin America and the Caribbean, sponsored by GVEP International, the Inter American Development Bank (IDB), GTZ and the Korean Government. They are Ken Aldonza and Bob Hathaway.
Aldonza, Director of Applied Renewables Caribbean, and two colleagues will receive $198,000 USD over two years to develop a plant using excess and waste bananas to produce ethanol for use in transport fuel on the island. The plant will be totally self-sufficient in energy.
Hathaway, a marine engineer, will receive $83,000 USD over two years to build an indirectly charged solar ferry. The technology could significantly reduce the environmental damage to the eco system of the island produced by traditional stroke engines.
The contest received 1,082 applications from every Latin American country (988 applications) and from nine Caribbean countries (94 applications). Twenty-five winners were selected from proposals originating in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and St. Lucia.
