Jamaica’s renewable energy portfolio is set to be upgraded by an additional 18 MegaWatts (MW) of wind power.
Wigton Windfarm Ltd is implementing a project that will install an additional nine Vestas Wind Systems turbines at its existing wind farm, boosting its installed capacity from 20.7 MW to 38.7 MW.
The project is estimated to cost US 49.9 million dollars and construction is scheduled to take approximately one year.
This installation will increase the country's renewable energy capacity to less than 5% of total installed electricity capacity. Jamaica’s Ministry of Energy, Mining & Telecommunications is suggesting that by 2010 fifteen percent of energy will be from renewable sources, to be doubled by the year 2020.
Wigton Windfarm Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) and is the owner and operator of the wind farm, which was commissioned in 2004.
