NEVIS MOVES CLOSER TO GEOTHERMAL ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION
June 11, 2008

The small island of Nevis moved closer to achieving a large measure of energy independence when the existence of a sustainable geothermal reservoir on the island was confirmed on Monday June 2nd by West Indies Power Holdings BV (WIPH), the developer of the ongoing geothermal energy project on the island.

Bringing to an end a four-month drilling programme at the Nevis 1 site at Spring Hill (one of two sites being investigated by WIPH), a 30 foot plume of steam jetted from the reservoir at a depth of 3,720 feet.  The steam had an almost-neutral ph of 6.7 (drinking water has a ph of 7).

This milestone indicates that the Nevis 1 site is validated as a commercial hydrothermal geothermal well; a finding which has also been made by independent consultants reviewing the project.

Chief executive of WIPH Kerry McDonald, advised that the reservoir exhibited a sustainable temperature of 250 degrees Centigrade, more than double the minimum temperature needed for geothermal energy production.

Having achieved this milestone Mr McDonald advised that “West Indies Power will now commence to develop the production wells on the reservoir so that the proposed 34 MegaWatt single flash geothermal plant to supply clean, affordable, renewable electricity to Nevis and St. Kitts will become a reality in 2009”.

The combined peak electricity demand on Nevis and nearby St Kitts is about 32 MegaWatts.

The technical specifications and engineering design of the plant have been completed and a project contractor has been selected for the construction of the power plant, which is scheduled to commence in October 2008.

Successful completion of the project will make Nevis the first country in the Caribbean to produce commercial geothermal electricity and one of the least fossil-fuel-dependent nations in the world.
