NEVIS AND WEST INDIES POWER COMMENCE POWER PURCHASE NEGOTIATIONS FOR GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Nov 8, 2008

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd have commenced negotiations to establish agreements that would govern the utilisation of the island’s geothermal energy resource.

Legal advisor to the NIA Patrice Nisbett confirmed this week that negotiations had commenced, and advised that the discussions would focus on the development of a Geothermal Resource Contract (GRC) and a power purchase agreement (PPA), to be established between Nevis Electricity Company Ltd (NEVLEC) and West Indies Power.

The PPA would define the relationship between WIP and NEVLEC and would specify the tariff that NEVLEC would pay for the geothermal power to be provided by WIP.

The NIA’s negotiation team is comprised of Nevis nationals and is assisted by attorney John Armstrong, an expert in geothermal energy legislation at the Organization of American States, and Paul Bropy, a geothermal specialist.

West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd is an independent private renewable energy development company, currently finalizing arrangements for the construction of a 35MW geothermal power plant in Nevis.  When completed, the plant will be the first commercial geothermal power plant in the English-speaking Caribbean.
